Dinoprostone is a prostaglandin, a hormone-like substance that is naturally produced by tissues in the body.

Dinoprostone topical is used in a pregnant woman to relax the muscles of the cervix (opening of the uterus) in preparation for inducing labor at the end of a pregnancy.

Symptomatic management of psychotic disorders (i.e., schizophrenia).

The long-acting decanoate ester is used mainly for maintenance therapy in patients with chronic schizophrenic disorder who cannot be relied on to take oral antipsychotic drugs; do not use for acute management of severely agitated patients.

Efficacy not established for management of behavioral complications in mental retardation.
