Consumer:Using succinylcholine together with propofol may increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects such as slow heart rate and heart block. A medication such as atropine may be given before induction and during anesthesia to help minimize the risk. These medications should only be given by health care providers specially trained in the use of these agents and in a setting where appropriate monitoring may be rendered. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: The concomitant administration of propofol and succinylcholine without an anticholinergic agent may increase the risk of myocardial depression and bradycardia. Both drugs have individually been associated with bradycardia. Cases of severe bradycardia have been reported in patients who received propofol and succinylcholine without atropine premedication.
MANAGEMENT: In general, anesthetics should be administered only by health care providers specially trained in the use of these agents and in the care of anesthetized patients.
