Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Tablets and Ribavirin
Determining the interaction of Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Tablets and Ribavirin and the possibility of their joint administration.
In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Using ribavirin together with tenofovir may lead to increased side effects. Contact your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/distention, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath, motor weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain in hands and feet. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Concomitant use of oral ribavirin and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) may increase the risk of symptomatic hyperlactatemia and lactic acidosis. Ribavirin itself is a nucleoside analogue, and these agents alone and in combination have been associated with the syndrome of lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis. Other mitochondrial toxicities associated with the use of nucleoside analogues include lipodystrophy, peripheral neuropathy, and pancreatitis.
MANAGEMENT: Coadministration of ribavirin and NRTIs should be undertaken with caution and only if the benefit is anticipated to outweigh the potential risks. Patients should be advised to promptly seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of toxicity such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/distention, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, tachypnea, dyspnea, motor weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain in hands and feet.
