Consumer:Sugammadex may reduce the blood levels and effects of norelgestromin. If you are using hormonal contraceptives, you may have an increased risk of breakthrough bleeding and unintended pregnancy for the next 7 days after receiving sugammadex. You should discuss the use of alternative or additional methods of birth control with your healthcare provider. If you take hormone replacement for menopause, notify your doctor if you experience increased symptoms or abnormal bleeding. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:ADDITIONAL CONTRACEPTION RECOMMENDED: Sugammadex may decrease the free plasma concentrations and therapeutic efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. In vitro binding studies indicate that sugammadex can bind to progestogen. Sugammadex 4 mg/kg is predicted to reduce progestogen systemic exposure (AUC) by 34%. The predicted effect is lower for estrogens. According to the manufacturer, the administration of a bolus dose of sugammadex may result in reduced contraceptive effectiveness equivalent to a missed dose of the contraceptive. Clinical data have not been reported.
MANAGEMENT: Female patients of reproductive potential receiving hormonal contraceptives (whether oral or non-oral) should use an additional, nonhormonal contraceptive method or backup method of contraception (e.g., condoms and spermicides) for 7 days after sugammadex administration.
