Consumer:

Using ethosuximide together with PHENobarbital may increase the effects of both medications. Contact your doctor if you experience confusion, slurred speech, stumbling or staggering walk, imbalance, nausea, vomiting, tremor, slow or shallow breathing, blurred vision, low blood pressure, extreme drowsiness, urinating less than usual or not at all, feeling light-headed, or fainting. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: The concomitant use of methsuximide and phenobarbital levels may result in increase serum levels of both drugs. The proposed mechanism is competition for the same metabolic pathway. Other succimides may also interact.

MANAGEMENT: If phenobarbital and a succinimide must be used together, monitoring of serum levels and observation for evidence of altered efficacy and safety is recommended. Dose adjustments may be necessary.
