Relevance: 05.10.2022 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Ask your doctor before using selegiline together with carbetapentane. Using these drugs together can lead to increased blood pressure, sudden and severe headache, rapid heartbeat, stiffness in your neck, nausea, vomiting, sweating, vision problems, and sensitivity to light. You should wait at least 14 days after you stop using an MAOI before you start using carbetapentane. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

GENERALLY AVOID: Labelings for products containing carbetapentane state that the drug should not be used in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). No data are available regarding a potential interaction. However, serious and fatal reactions have been associated with another cough suppressant, dextromethorphan, during coadministration with MAOIs. Dextromethorphan is a weak serotonin reuptake inhibitor whose serotonergic activity may be enhanced by MAOIs. The result is an increased risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of brainstem 5-HT1A receptors and characterized by symptoms such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia.

MANAGEMENT: Products containing carbetapentane should not be used concurrently with MAOIs or for 14 days after stopping treatment with an MAOI.
