Consumer:

Using PHENobarbital together with felbamate may increase the effects of PHENobarbital. Contact your doctor if you experience restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck, slow heartbeat, shallow breathing, feeling light-headed, fainting, fever, sore throat, and easy bruising or bleeding. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

ADJUST DOSE: Felbamate may decrease the hepatic metabolism of phenobarbital. Phenobarbital toxicity may result. In addition, phenobarbital may induce felbamate metabolism resulting in decreased felbamate concentrations. It may take up to 1 month to reach steady state phenobarbital concentrations.

MANAGEMENT: If this combination cannot be avoided, the phenobarbital dose may require a 25% reduction. Patients should be closely monitored for clinical response and phenobarbital toxicity (drowsiness, ataxia, lethargy) for at least one month after initiating concomitant therapy. Decreased phenobarbital doses may be required if felbamate is discontinued.
