Using carBAMazepine together with fluvoxaMINE may increase the effects of carBAMazepine. Contact your doctor if you experience shallow breathing, fast heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, urinating less or not at all, muscle twitches, restlessness, tremors, slurred speech, staggering walk, and feeling light-headed or fainting. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: When fluvoxamine is administered with carbamazepine, plasma carbamazepine levels may be increased and toxicity could result. It is suspected that the mechanism is related to inhibition of CYP450 hepatic metabolism by fluvoxamine.

MANAGEMENT: If these drugs must be used together, close observation for clinical and laboratory evidence of carbamazepine toxicity is recommended. A reduction of the carbamazepine dose may be required. Patients should be advised to report signs of carbamazepine toxicity (nausea, visual disturbances, dizziness, or ataxia) to their physician.
