A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Using galantamine together with succinylcholine may alter the effects of succinylcholine. You should be monitored closely for breathing difficulty when these medications are used together. You may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors may prolong and/or enhance the muscle relaxation effects of succinylcholine by blocking the activity of plasma cholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of succinylcholine. Prolonged neuromuscular blockade and respiratory depression may occur.
MANAGEMENT: It may be appropriate to discontinue acetylcholinesterase inhibitor therapy for a few days before the procedure depending on the needs of the patient. Otherwise, the patient should be monitored closely for increased pharmacologic effects of succinylcholine. Peripheral nerve stimulators are recommended for accurate assessment of neuromuscular blockade in patients who have been taking pyridostigmine.
