Relevance: 13.08.2022 Reviewer: Shkutko P.M., M.D., in

In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.

Consumer:

Ask your doctor before using linezolid together with ginseng. Using these drugs together can lead to increased blood pressure, sudden and severe headache, rapid heartbeat, stiffness in your neck, nausea, vomiting, sweating, vision problems, and sensitivity to light. You should wait at least 14 days after you stop using an MAOI before you start using ginseng. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

GENERALLY AVOID: Ginseng may potentiate the effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Headaches, tremors, insomnia, and/or manic episodes have been reported rarely in patients receiving phenelzine concurrently with or following the addition of ginseng. An inadvertent rechallenge in one case led to similar reactions. The mechanism of interaction is unknown, although ginseng reportedly may have central nervous system stimulating and psychoactive properties.

MANAGEMENT: In general, patients should consult a healthcare provider before taking any herbal or alternative medicine. While data are limited, it may be prudent to avoid the use of ginseng in patients receiving MAOIs or other agents which possess MAOI activity (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, procarbazine). At least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of MAOI therapy and initiation of treatment with agents that may interact with MAOIs.
