Using haloperidol together with carBAMazepine may decrease the effects of haloperidol. You should be closely monitored for mental status changes, including hallucinations, delusions, and confusion. Contact your doctor if you use haloperidol together with carBAMazepine. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Carbamazepine may decrease serum concentrations of butyrophenones. The mechanism may be related to carbamazepine induction of CYP450 metabolism. Additionally, cases of delirium have been reported in patients taking haloperidol and carbamazepine. Data have been conflicting, and no changes, deterioration, and improvements in patient symptomatology have been reported with this combination.

MANAGEMENT: Close observation for altered clinical effects is recommended if these drugs must be used together.
