Consumer:Using haloperidol together with butabarbital can decrease the effects of butabarbital. Contact your doctor if you experience seizures or develop a fever. You may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Barbiturates may decrease serum butyrophenone concentrations. The mechanism may be related to induction of the CYP450 metabolism of butyrophenones. Although phenobarbital is the only barbiturate specifically implicated in this interaction, other barbiturates may participate as well. Additionally, one fatal case of hyperpyrexia has been reported in a patient treated with haloperidol for barbiturate withdrawal.
MANAGEMENT: Close observation for decreased neuroleptic effect and fever is indicated if these drugs must be used together.
