Consumer:Using heparin together with prasugrel can increase the risk of bleeding complications. Call your doctor promptly if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, swelling, vomiting, blood in your urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Concomitant use of prasugrel with other agents that affect hemostasis including heparin may increase the risk of bleeding. According to the product labeling, the effects of prasugrel on platelet aggregation were not significantly affected by single doses of heparin (100 units/kg IV). However, bleeding time was increased compared with either drug alone.
MANAGEMENT: Although prasugrel may be used in combination with heparin, caution is advised during coadministration. Close clinical and laboratory observation for hemorrhagic complications is recommended. Patients should be advised to promptly report any signs of bleeding to their doctor, including pain, swelling, headache, dizziness, weakness, prolonged bleeding from cuts, increased menstrual flow, vaginal bleeding, nosebleeds, bleeding of gums from brushing, unusual bleeding or bruising, red or brown urine, or red or black stools.
