Consumer:

Using dyphylline together with imipenem may cause seizures. Contact your doctor if you experience confusion, seizures, and other mental status changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Some case reports suggest an increased risk of seizures when theophylline and imipenem are coadministered. The mechanism is unknown. Patients receiving large doses of either drug and/or with renal dysfunction may be at a higher risk.

MANAGEMENT: Dosing should be individualized and patients should be closely monitored for signs of neurotoxicity (e.g., confusion, seizures, myoclonic activity).
