Isoniazid Tablets and Valproic acid
Determining the interaction of Isoniazid Tablets and Valproic acid and the possibility of their joint administration.
In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Using isoniazid together with valproic acid can increase the blood levels or add to the side effects of either medication. Contact your doctor if you experience weakness, fatigue, confusion, loss of muscle coordination, increased seizures, nausea, or vomiting. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Several case reports suggest that combining valproic acid (or its derivatives) and isoniazid may increase the toxicity of both drugs. The mechanism, while not established, is probably inhibition by isoniazid of the hepatic metabolism of valproic acid. Case reports suggest that the risk of this interaction may be greater for slow acetylators of isoniazid.
MANAGEMENT: Valproic acid dosage may need to be reduced if isoniazid is added to the therapy. Additional monitoring for altered valproic acid response may be prudent when isoniazid therapy is started or stopped. Patients should be advised to notify their caregiver if they experience weakness, fatigue, confusion, ataxia, increased seizures, nausea, or vomiting during concomitant use.
