Consumer:Before taking verapamil, tell your doctor if you also use lithium. You may need dose adjustments or special tests in order to safely take both medications together. This combination may alter your lithium levels. You should notify your doctor if you have symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, tremor, thirst, lack of coordination, or muscle weakness. It is important that you tell your healthcare provider about all other medications that you are using including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using your medications without first talking to your doctor first.
Professional:MONITOR: Verapamil has variable effects on lithium levels. Increases, decreases, and no change in serum lithium levels have all been reported. The mechanism is unknown.
MANAGEMENT: Patients who must take both drugs should be monitored for evidence of lithium toxicity. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they experience symptoms of possible lithium toxicity such as drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, ataxia, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, blurry vision, tinnitus, or tremor.
