Lamotrigine is used alone or together with other medicines to help control certain types of seizures (eg, partial seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome) in the treatment of epilepsy. This medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. It can also be used in the treatment of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) in adults.

This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.

Used alone or in combination with a sulfonylurea, metformin, or insulin as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 (noninsulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Should be added to, not substituted for, other antidiabetic agents in patients whose NIDDM is not adequately controlled by these agents.

May be added to glyburide/metformin fixed combination therapy if hyperglycemia is not adequately controlled with the fixed combination. May be used in combination with repaglinide if hyperglycemia is not adequately controlled with diet, exercise, and monotherapy with another oral antidiabetic agent.

Not effective as sole therapy for type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis.
