Professional:MONITOR: One study has suggested that combining methadone with zidovudine may increase blood levels of zidovudine and reduce effects of methadone. The mechanism is unknown but may be related to and inhibition of zidovudine metabolism by methadone and induction of methadone metabolism by zidovudine.
MANAGEMENT: If these drugs must be used together, close observation for clinical and laboratory evidence of zidovudine toxicity (anemia, granulocytopenia, myalgia, nausea, vomiting) and altered methadone efficacy is recommended.
