Consumer:Talk to your doctor before using teriflunomide together with medroxyPROGESTERone. Combining these medications may increase the blood levels and effects of some hormone-based medications. The risk of side effects such as insulin resistance, lipid disorders, acne, and blood clots may increase. Talk to your gynecologist or other healthcare professional for help in selecting effective methods of birth control or hormone replacement that work best for you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Coadministration with teriflunomide may increase the plasma concentrations of contraceptive hormones. The mechanism of interaction has not been described. In study subjects, ethinyl estradiol peak plasma concentration (Cmax) and systemic exposure (AUC) increased by approximately 1.5-fold each, and levonorgestrel Cmax and AUC increased by approximately 1.3- and 1.4-fold, respectively, following repeated doses of teriflunomide.
MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if teriflunomide is prescribed in patients receiving hormonal contraceptives due to the potential for increased adverse effects such as thromboembolism. Consideration should be given to the type or dose of contraceptives used in combination with teriflunomide.
