Consumer:

Using zidovudine together with methadone may alter the effects of both medications. Contact your doctor if you experience unusual muscle pain and weakness, trouble breathing, fast or uneven heart rate, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and numbness or cold feeling in your arms or legs, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, low fever, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: One study has suggested that combining methadone with zidovudine may increase blood levels of zidovudine and reduce effects of methadone. The mechanism is unknown but may be related to and inhibition of zidovudine metabolism by methadone and induction of methadone metabolism by zidovudine.

MANAGEMENT: If these drugs must be used together, close observation for clinical and laboratory evidence of zidovudine toxicity (anemia, granulocytopenia, myalgia, nausea, vomiting) and altered methadone efficacy is recommended.
