Consumer:

Before taking midazolam, tell your doctor if you also use raNITIdine. You may need dose adjustments to safely take both medications together. This combination may cause severe or prolonged drowsiness. If you take both medications together, tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. Avoid driving until you know how the medications will affect you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Ranitidine may significantly increase plasma concentrations of oral midazolam and triazolam and enhance sedation. The mechanism may be related to inhibition of hepatic cytochrome P450-mediated metabolism. Coadministration of oral ranitidine 150 mg twice daily increased the AUC of oral midazolam by 65% and of triazolam by 30%. Raniditine 300 mg orally increased the AUC of intravenous midazolam by only 9%.

MANAGEMENT: Clinical monitoring for excessive or prolonged sedation is recommended.
