Consumer:

Ask your doctor before using mitoMYcin together with tamoxifen. Taking these medications together can cause damage to the kidneys. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may already be aware of the risks, but has determined that this is the best course of treatment for you and has taken appropriate precautions and is monitoring you closely for any potential complications. Kidney function and drug levels in the blood may be monitored with blood tests during treatment. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Tamoxifen significantly increases the risk of microangiopathic hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) associated with mitomycin C. HUS can be fatal in up to 50% of affected patients. The mechanism of this interaction is not known, but may involve a combination of subclinical endothelial damage induced by mitomycin C and a thrombotic effect on platelets caused by tamoxifen.

MANAGEMENT: Some experts advise that tamoxifen should be avoided during or immediately after mitomycin C therapy unless the patient is carefully monitored with frequent and regular CBCs as well as serum BUN and creatinine measurements.
