Consumer:Using rifAMPin together with morphine may decrease the effects of morphine. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or if you experience diminished pain control. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Coadministration of rifampin and morphine has been reported to decrease the analgesic effect of morphine, and the concentration of morphine and two of its metabolites. The mechanism may be related to induction of morphine metabolism or elimination. A similar interaction between morphine and rifabutin may also occur.
MANAGEMENT: The dosage of morphine may need to be readjusted depending on changes in the patient's clinical response to pain and/or narcotic side effects, if rifampin or rifabutin is added to or removed from a patient's therapy.
