Using buPROPion together with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like selegiline is not recommended. Combining these medications can cause blood pressure to get dangerously high, which may be a medical emergency. Other side effects of buPROPion may also be increased, such as headache, sleep disturbances, tremor, restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, palpitation, and rapid heartbeat. Serious and potentially life-threatening problems can occur. Generally, you should wait at least 14 days after you stop using an MAOI before you start using buPROPion; however, for a few MAOIs, the wait can be as short as 24 hours. Check with your healthcare provider before you start using buPROPion if you have been receiving selegiline. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

CONTRAINDICATED: Coadministration of bupropion with other drugs that also inhibit the reuptake of dopamine or norepinephrine, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), may increase the risk of hypertensive reactions. Additionally, MAOIs can increase dopaminergic and noradrenergic activity by inhibiting the metabolism of dopamine and norepinephrine. Studies in animals demonstrate that the acute toxicity of bupropion may also be enhanced by MAOIs. The interaction has been reported with phenelzine.

MANAGEMENT: Concurrent use of bupropion with MAOIs or other agents that possess MAOI activity (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, procarbazine) is considered contraindicated. At least 14 days (or 24 hours for reversible MAOIs such as moclobemide and linezolid) should elapse between discontinuation of MAOI therapy and initiation of treatment with bupropion. Conversely, at least 14 days should elapse after discontinuation of bupropion and initiation of MAOI therapy.
