One study has suggested that clonidine may markedly reduce the fentanyl dosage required for prevention of hyperdynamic cardiovascular responses to laryngoscopy and intubation. The authors proposed that synergistic inhibitory actions of opiates and alpha-2-adrenoreceptor agonists on central sympathetic outflow may have accounted for reduced fentanyl requirement.
