Consumer:

Cholestyramine may interfere with the absorption of obeticholic acid and reduce its levels in the bloodstream. This may make the medication less effective in treating your condition. You should take obeticholic acid at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after cholestyramine, or separate the dosing times by as much as possible if a 4 hour interval is not achievable. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Because bile acid sequestrants adsorb and reduce bile acid absorption, they may reduce the bioavailability and efficacy of obeticholic acid during concomitant administration.

MANAGEMENT: When used with a bile acid sequestrant, obeticholic acid should be administered at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after dosing of the bile acid sequestrant, or at as great an interval as possible.
