In one patient, the addition of papaya extract to a stabilized regimen of warfarin resulted in a substantially increased INR. Details of the case were not reported. The mechanism of the potential interaction, if any, between warfarin and papaya extract is unknown. However, the constituent in papaya extract believed to be responsible is papain. Until further data are available, excessive consumption of papaya extract or papain supplements should preferably be avoided in patients treated with warfarin or related agents.
