Paroxetine Controlled-Release Tablets and Prozac Capsules
Determining the interaction of Paroxetine Controlled-Release Tablets and Prozac Capsules and the possibility of their joint administration.
In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Using FLUoxetine within 2 weeks after or 5 weeks before using PARoxetine may increase your blood levels of either medication. This can cause side effects such as restlessness, agitation, fever, sweating, shivering, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, overactive reflexes, fast heart rate, confusion, hallucinations, or feeling like you might pass out. Talk with your doctor before using fluoxetine and paroxetine together, or if you have recently started or stopped taking either medication. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Fluoxetine and paroxetine are both substrates as well as inhibitors of the CYP450 2D6 isoenzyme. During coadministration or sequential use shortly after one has been discontinued, plasma concentrations of both drugs may be increased due to competitive inhibition and saturation of CYP450 2D6. Enhanced drug effects may also occur because of duplicative pharmacodynamic activities.
MANAGEMENT: Lower dosages may be appropriate during initiation of therapy with one selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor shortly after discontinuation of the other. The potential for interaction may exist if fluoxetine is administered within approximately 2 weeks after the withdrawal of paroxetine, or if paroxetine is administered within 5 weeks after withdrawal of fluoxetine. Close monitoring is recommended for signs and symptoms of excessive serotonergic activity (i.e. serotonin syndrome) such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia.
