Using rifAMPin together with phenytoin may decrease the effects of phenytoin. Contact your doctor if your condition changes of if you experience loss of seizure control. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

MONITOR: Rifampin may induce the CYP450 hepatic metabolism of phenytoin. Plasma concentrations and clinical effects of phenytoin may be decreased.

MANAGEMENT: If rifampin and phenytoin must be used together, close observation for clinical and laboratory evidence of altered phenytoin effect is recommended. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they experience loss of seizure control. It may be necessary to increase phenytoin dosage.
