Consumer:Using glimepiride together with cholestyramine can alter the effects of glimepiride, which can lead to loss of blood sugar control. Talk with your doctor before using glimepiride while you are using cholestyramine. Glimepiride should be administered at least one hour before or four to six hours after cholestyramine. You may need a dose adjustment and you may need to check your blood sugar more often. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Cholestyramine may decrease hypoglycemic effect of some sulfonylureas by decreasing their absorption and enterohepatic recirculation. Data exist for glipizide; the effect of cholestyramine on the pharmacokinetics of other sulfonylureas is unknown.
MANAGEMENT: Sulfonylureas should be administered at least one hour before or four to six hours after cholestyramine. Patients receiving this combination should be advised to closely monitor their blood sugar and to notify their physician if loss of control occurs.
