Consumer:Using procainamide together with trimethoprim may increase the effects of procainamide. Contact your doctor if you experience tiredness, dizziness, fainting, confusion, tremor, difficulty breathing, and an irregular heartbeat. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:MONITOR: Trimethoprim may decrease the renal secretion of procainamide. Serum procainamide levels may be increased.
MANAGEMENT: Serum procainamide and NAPA levels should be checked during therapy, and procainamide dosage should be decreased, if necessary. Patients should be advised to promptly notify their physician if they experience drowsiness, dizziness, syncope, confusion, tremor, or palpitations.
