Consumer:Ask your doctor before using quiNIDine together with vecuronium. This can increase the effects vecuronium and cause fainting or lightheadedness, fever, pounding heartbeat, shortness of breath, wheezing, unusual muscle weakness, or tiredness. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:GENERALLY AVOID: The pharmacologic effects of nondepolarizing muscle relaxants and quinidine may be additive. The mechanism may be related to depression of the action potential in skeletal muscles and curare-like effects on the neuromuscular junction by quinidine. This combination could result in increased neuromuscular blockade and respiratory depression.
MANAGEMENT: Quinidine should not be administered immediately after surgery. If it is necessary, the patient's vital signs should be closely monitored. Mechanical ventilatory support may be required during coadministration.
