Retrovir Intravenous and Stavudine
Determining the interaction of Retrovir Intravenous and Stavudine and the possibility of their joint administration.
In the database of official manuals used in the service creation an interaction registered by statistical results of studies was found, which can either lead to negative consequences for the patient health or strengthen a mutual positive effect. A doctor should be consulted to address the issue of joint drug administration.
Consumer:Ask your doctor before using zidovudine together with stavudine. Using these medications together may cause either medication to be less effective. Contact your doctor if your condition worsens. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Professional:GENERALLY AVOID: In vitro data have demonstrated an antagonistic relationship between zidovudine and stavudine. The proposed mechanism is competition for phosphorylating enzymes required for nucleoside activation. A 41% reduction in active stavudine metabolites was reported when zidovudine was administered with stavudine. No effect on zidovudine activity was noted. Reduced stavudine activation and loss of antiviral activity due to prior zidovudine modification of intracellular phosphorylation has been suggested, but this was not confirmed by other studies. Further clarification is needed.
MANAGEMENT: The manufacturer recommends against concurrent use.
