Consumer:

Using rifAMPin together with theophylline can decrease the effects of theophylline. You should be advised to notify your doctor if you experience a worsening of breathing problems. You may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Professional:

MONITOR: Rifampin may decrease the plasma concentrations of theophyllines by inducing CYP450 3A4 and 1A2 hepatic metabolism.

MANAGEMENT: While receiving rifampin, patients should be monitored for changes in theophylline serum concentrations or inadequate response to theophylline. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they experience a worsening of their respiratory symptoms. Dosages should be adjusted as necessary.
